I have only worn variations of only one type Levi's jeans - the legendary button fly 501s. However, I have always wondered about their numbering system and was unable to find out what the different numbers meant. It's not explained on the Levi's site as well.

That was until today. Searching on Google lead me to WikiAnswers and more specifically the question: What are the differences in style number of levi's?

The person who posted it also got it form another site but I think it's accurate.

Denim giant Levi Strauss has designed a pair of jeans, called RedWire DLX Jeans, able to control a wearer's Apple iPod music player. The RedWire DLX Jeans will have an iPod remote control and docking station fitted in its pockets, and comes complete with attached headphones. To be launched in August 2006, the jeans will cost approximately $250. Levi Strauss is not the first to produce iPod-compatible clothing, but it is believed to be the first to do so for trousers or jeans. No details of how exactly the owner will be able to wash them have been released.

In 2000, the "Launderette" advert for Levi's 501s was named the 6th best television commercial of all time, in a poll conducted by The Sunday Times and Channel 4, a UK Based Television channel & newspaper.

Hi Danny, There are a few other straight cut styles. You can still get 523s from Ebay and Vintage shops as well.

Read a magazine article years ago (90's)that stated the number stamped on the back of the waist button indicated the manufacturing site. And that they still manufactured in San Francisco, but those jeans, (just 501's if I remember correctly) were exported only to Japan. The Japanese are willing to pay for American manufactured jeans I guess.
I wish we could find the codes on the interwebs!

It looks like it's style then a color code. So good to know. I've been searching for another pair of my favorite jeans for a while!

The 700 series is not just "the women's series," unless things have changed in the past 20 years, which could have happened.
I've always thought it was the "student fit" series--essentially smaller sizes, like waists from 24" to 28", of their regular 500 styles. I distinctly remember wearing 705s and 707s is the late 70s/early 80s.

The number on the back of waist button does not indicate the location, it's there to match the assembly line and stock they are for as the buttons comes from ykk (they stamp the number) and the same number is on the inner washing labels which makes it smoother and error free while completion and also intimately used to spot authenticity.go check yours, it's fun :)

I’ve been absolutely dying to find even a mention of the 519 SLIM men’s jeans. And no not the current 519 skinny ones that keep coming up in all my searches. I bought the 519 SLIM jeans about 5 years ago. Never saw them again. On eBay there’s about 50 ads and out of those I gotta find the right size and colour. Anyone??
